Gerald Orpen
Head of Diagnostic Services
Gerald leads the development and delivery of Medica Ireland’s diagnostic imaging services, with a particular focus on clinical quality, operational performance, service development and continuous improvement.
A qualified radiographer and sonographer, Gerald brings more than 13 years’ experience from the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he progressed through senior clinical, advanced-practice and management roles. His experience spans general radiography, ultrasound, PACS, radiation protection, quality assurance and clinical audit. Before joining Medica, he served as Radiography Services Manager, leading quality and audit initiatives across Diagnostic Imaging.
Gerald holds an MSc in Ultrasound from University College Dublin, an MSc in Quality and Healthcare Management from RCSI and a postgraduate certificate in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound from Brunel University London. He has also contributed to professional education, including teaching on lower-limb DVT ultrasound, and was named Irish Radiographer of the Year in 2016.
Gerald’s leadership approach is clinically grounded, collaborative and strongly focused on quality. He is particularly interested in advancing professional practice, strengthening clinical and operational standards, supporting multidisciplinary teams and developing imaging services that are safe, efficient and responsive to patient and healthcare-partner needs.
